Ahead of the NATO Summit 2012, Romania's President Traian Basescu met with representatives of the Romanian community in Chicago. The 200 people participating at the presidential reception that took place at the historical Drake Hotel, included local Romanian-American organizations such as the Romanian Cultural Exchange, local press and representatives of the Romanian community. The event provided Romanians from Chicago the opportunity of having an open dialog with the president. Topics of interest to the Diaspora as well as related to Romania's foreign policy were discussed.

The delegation accompanying President Basescu for the NATO Summit 2012 in Chicago included: General Staff Chief Stefan Danila, Foreign Affairs Minister Andrei Marga, National Defense Minister Corneliu Dobritoiu, presidential advisers Cristian Diaconescu, Iulian Fota and Iulian Chifu, State Adviser Eugen Tomac, Foreign Affairs Ministry's Secretary of State Bogdan Aurescu.

World Sport Chicago and the Chicago NATO Host Committee, will host a youth soccer and basketball tournament in honor of the 25th NATO Summit on Saturday, May 12th, 2012 at Washington Park in Chicago's Hyde Park community.

Teams from across Chicago ages 11 to 13 will play under the name of a country participating in the Summit and have the opportunity to learn about the culture and people that they represent. The event will connect yourth to the Summit and will celebrate Chicago's international community and love of sport. ROCX will be hosting the Romanian booth at the event.

The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and the Facets Cinémathèque are proud to present the first Chicago retrospective on the cinema of Lucian Pintilie, a Romanian-born director whose career in theater, opera, film and television provided international recognition. One of Europe's finest filmmakers, his work has explored questions of tyranny and remorse—often relating directly or allegorically to the history of his own country. His work also evokes the remembrance of the tolerant and cosmopolitan nature of his hometown, a German village within Southern Bessarabia which he describes as a halcyon polyglot and multicultural community, a key detail which has informed his body of work. He fled Romania in the 70s, and returned to his home country following the end of communism, and then made extraordinary films about life and its absurdities, beginning with The Oak (1992) and continuing with such acclaimed films as Afternoon of a Torturer (2001) and Niki and Flo (2003), "a mordant almost-comedy that represents a bridge—and also a battle—between the old Romania and the new." (A. O. Scott, The New York Times) As Pintilie has observed about his own work, "What is the survival strategy of a community in a state of perpetual catastrophe?... And when does making fun—the assumed irresponsibility, the dark humor that we, Romanians, are so proud of—stop being an impenetrable shield? This is the number one matter in all my movies." He has been both a prolific auteur and a supporter of a new generation of filmmakers. This complete retrospective of 10 films concludes with the artist's most recent work, the short film Tertium non datur (2005).

All the prints come from the Romanian National Film Center in Bucharest.

This program had its U.S. Premiere on March 1-12, 2012 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film), presented in association with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, and in collaboration with the Romanian Film Festival in New York and the Romanian National Film Center. With the support of Transilvania International Film Festival and Mihai Chirilov.

ROCX is proud to host the Romanian Soiree as part of Alliance Francaise's Festival de la Francophonie. Please join us for a glass of wine and the screening of "The Silent Wedding" (2008) directed by the renowned actor Horatiu Malaele, starring Meda Andreea Victor, Alexandru Potocean and Valentin Teodosiu.

Synopsis: In 1953, the wedding of a young couple continues silently after the whole country is mourning the death of Stalin. The screenplay is based on a true story which took place in a small rural village in Romania.

"Horatiu Malaele helmed this Romanian-language nuptial comedy. A period film set in March 1953, at the exact moment of Josef Stalin's death, it tells of a couple, Fira (Luminita Gheorgiu) and Iancu (Alexandru Potoceanu) determinedly attempting to celebrate their wedding festivities despite repeated interruptions thanks to the dictator's passing. The theatre and Interpretation Center at Northwestern University presents the world premiere of “Being Antigone”. The one woman multimedia show features actor Amy Elizabeth Munz of Romanian origins. The production follows three women in a timeless, borderless search for justice. The Settings: Classical Greece, an Ivy League University in the 1980s, and The Romanian Revolution of 1989. The characters: Antigone, May, and Rodica.
