            3rd Annual Romanian Film Festival of Chicago

            Romanian Cultural Exchange (ROCX) is hosting the 3rd Romanian Film Festival in Chicago, scheduled for May 27-29, 2011 at the Skokie Theatre. This event draws the highest population of people with Romanian heritage in the Mid-West, and hundreds of film lovers. The Romanian Community in Chicago alone accounts for over 100,000 people. The event will include an opening cocktail party to honor lead Romanian film industry players and our elite sponsors.

            As the L.A. Times quotes, "Romanians can't make a bad film. It's like, illegal in their country." We invite you to join the Romanian community, and foreign film enthusiasts alike in discovering the cinematic phenomenon that left a fierce impression on film festivals all over the world. Help ROCX make that impact in Chicago.

            All sceenings will run with English subtitles. To purchase early bird tickets, please scroll down this page. Tickets will be sold at an additional charge the week of the festival (May 23-29th) both online and at the entrance.

            Director: Ovi Morariu (2011)
            Synopsis: In the cold evening of March 1st, a young girl has to go to the flower market to buy flowers for her mom. The only one flower shop left open is run by a gypsy seller, who falls in love at the first sight with her. 

            Silent Wedding
            Director: Horatiu Malaele (2008)
            Starring: Meda Andreea Victor, Alexandru Potocean and Valentin Teodosiu
            Synopsis: In 1953, the wedding of a young couple continues silently after the whole country is mourning the death of Stalin. The screenplay is based on a true story which took place in a small rural village in Romania.

            The screenings will be preceded by the opening gala. The event will include cocktail party to honor lead Romanian film industry players and our elite sponsors. Wine and Romanian appetizers will be served. Come socialize with the Romanian-American community and meet our special guests.

            Synopsis: It's Maxim's birthday. He's 8 years old. He lives together only with his mother in a village not so close to the big city. For his birthday, his mother will take him to Bucharest, to McDonald's. There, Maxim hopes to meet his father.

            The World According To Ion B (documentary)
            Director: Alexander Nanau (2009)
            Synopsis: The documentary follows in real life the dream of any man living on the streets - to one day become famous and leave behind a life of poverty, misery and humiliation. Ion Barladeanu is on his way to becoming an important contemporary artist, but in May 2008 he was still an anonymous tramp on the streets of Bucharest.

            Synopsis: Francesca is a young kindergarten teacher whose dream is to immigrate to Italy. Searching for a better life, Francesca is ready to overcome any obstacles, even the worries and the doubtfulness of the people closest to her. The plan is that her boyfriend, Mita, should join her in Italy as soon as he closes the small business he runs. Things take an unfortunate turn, painful truths come to light and priorities change.

            Synopsis: The film explores the image of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu using unknown official footage from the Romanian National Television and National Film Archives.
